Ronald Spektor was sentenced in Brooklyn on Sept. 23 to a prison term of four to 12 years for his role in a Coinbase phishing and social engineering scheme. The cases tied to him put the stolen amount at about $15.9 million to nearly $16 million, with roughly 100 Coinbase users identified as victims. Separate federal coverage also described a different alleged crypto fraud case in Missouri involving money laundering charges and about $16 million sent by one victim to a fake platform.
What this rests on
Market reaction
We track the total crypto market, but we only have 3 market cap points in that window. The series is stored every half hour, so newer events will have it. Computing it from two points would not be a reaction, it would be a coincidence.
How the story was built
Every piece in order, with the time its news medium declares — if it is not believable we use ours and say so — and what it added to what was already known at that point. Arriving first is not the same as adding something.
