The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on Sept. 28, giving Coinbase its own U.S. clearinghouse for fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. The approval adds clearing to Coinbase’s existing brokerage and exchange setup, and several pieces say the firm can use USDC as collateral with 24/7 settlement for eligible contracts. Coinbase still keeps margined products and some planned products with outside clearing partners.

What it means
In practice, Coinbase’s setup now includes the clearing layer for fully collateralized derivatives, while margined products stay with outside partners. The change does not extend to everything: some products remain outside the new clearinghouse, and Coinbase’s existing brokerage and exchange roles continue as before.
