Cardano Founder Developing New Programming Language
Published Updated 5 new reports since it was first published
Charles Hoskinson said he is personally developing a new programming language for Cardano and is doing so with one other developer, Lucas Rosa, at Input Output Global. The language is being framed around transaction requests and cryptographic proof features, but no name, code, specifications, or release date have been shared.
What this rests on
What it means
Cardano's smart-contract layer has run on Plutus, a Haskell-based language IOG shipped with the Alonzo upgrade in 2021, with community tools like Aiken emerging later to ease adoption. Hoskinson founded IOG in 2015 and has repeatedly pushed to simplify developer experience on the extended UTXO model, which many builders find harder to reason about than Ethereum's account-based approach. A language built by the founder himself, rather than a broader IOG team, marks a different mode of delivery.
Developers currently writing Plutus or Aiken contracts have nothing to migrate yet: no syntax, compiler, or testnet exists, so existing codebases and audits stay untouched for now. If the language ships, teams building privacy-sensitive apps, identity checks or conditional payments could write logic that proves conditions were met without revealing the underlying data, using transaction intents paired with Groth16 proofs. Until specs appear, tooling vendors and wallet integrators have nothing concrete to build against.
Groth16 is a well-tested zk-SNARK system, used for years in Zcash's shielded transactions, so pairing it with proof-carrying data is a credible technical direction rather than a speculative one. The open question is governance, not cryptography: a language designed and coded largely by one person, even one as central as Hoskinson, concentrates design decisions in a way that cuts against Cardano's own peer-reviewed, committee-driven development process that IOG has long advertised as a differentiator.
Hoskinson has given no release date, name or specification, so the next milestone is simply the first public code or technical paper from him or Lucas Rosa at Input Output Global. A working prototype or testnet demo would signal the project has moved past a founder's X posts; continued silence past Hoskinson's Oct. 18 remarks would suggest it remains an early, unscheduled experiment.

How the story was built
Every piece in order, with the time its news medium declares — if it is not believable we use ours and say so — and what it added to what was already known at that point. Arriving first is not the same as adding something.
