OKXICE faces objections from 9 companies over stock tokens
Published
Nine companies objected to tokenized share trading on OKXICE under the SEC’s new rules for blockchain stocks. Broadcom, CoreWeave, and UnitedHealth were among the companies named in the objections, and the companies had opted out after reviewing the risks.
What this rests on
What it means
OKXICE is the exchange arm through which OKX has moved into tokenized equities, built around the SEC's new framework that lets trading venues offer blockchain-based versions of listed shares as long as issuers are given a say in whether their stock can be wrapped this way. The model echoes the backlash Robinhood faced in 2025 when it issued SpaceX and OpenAI tokens in Europe without those companies' involvement, prompting both firms to publicly disclaim any connection to the products. That episode pushed regulators toward an opt-in or opt-out structure rather than letting exchanges tokenize any public company unilaterally.
For traders, the practical effect is that shares of Broadcom, CoreWeave and UnitedHealth will not appear as tokenized instruments on OKXICE, closing off a route some had expected to use for round-the-clock or cross-border exposure to those stocks via blockchain rails. Anyone wanting that exposure has to fall back on conventional brokerage accounts and standard market hours, while OKXICE is left building its tokenized stock catalog only from issuers that do not object. The companies themselves lose nothing by opting out beyond forgoing a secondary trading venue they did not ask for, and they retain full control over who can claim to represent their equity on-chain.
The objections expose a basic tension in tokenized equities: a product marketed as giving crypto-native, permissionless access to blue-chip stocks turns out to depend entirely on issuer consent, which is the opposite of permissionless. Nine opt-outs in one batch suggest that corporate caution, not technical limitation, is the binding constraint on how far this market can scale, and that boards are treating tokenization the way they treat any unauthorized use of their name or brand. That is a reasonable instinct given the SpaceX and OpenAI precedent, but it also means the token supply available to platforms like OKXICE will be shaped by legal risk appetite at individual companies rather than by demand from traders.
