Chainlink introduced CustodySync with Anchorage Digital Bank on October 26 as an interoperability setup for institutional borrowing in DeFi markets. The launch frames qualified custody, shared price data, and custody-side handling of collateral, margin, and liquidation as the core pieces of the arrangement.

What it means
Qualified custody rules require regulated entities to keep client crypto with licensed custodians rather than in self-managed wallets, which has long locked institutional capital out of DeFi lending pools like Aave or Compound that demand assets move onchain. Anchorage Digital Bank, the OCC-chartered crypto bank since January 2021, has built its business on that compliance layer. Chainlink's oracle network has supplied price feeds to DeFi since 2019, making it the natural plumbing to bridge the two worlds.
Institutions using Anchorage as custodian can now pledge those assets as collateral and draw loans from DeFi markets without transferring them out of custody, removing a key compliance blocker for banks, asset managers and funds bound by custody mandates. Anchorage still manages margin calls and liquidation, so the operational risk of moving funds onchain disappears for the borrower. DeFi lending protocols gain access to institutional-size collateral pools that previously sat sidelined, widening their borrower base beyond crypto-native funds.
Calling this DeFi invites scrutiny: a custodian unilaterally holding collateral and controlling liquidation looks closer to a bank-intermediated credit line than to permissionless, self-custodied lending. Shared price feeds keep valuations consistent across the custodian and the lending protocol, but the arrangement still depends on trusting one institution's custody and risk controls rather than code alone. The trade-off is familiar: unlocking regulated capital for onchain markets requires reintroducing the gatekeepers crypto lending was built to bypass.
The test now is adoption beyond the Oct. 26 launch: whether other qualified custodians follow Anchorage's lead and which DeFi lending protocols agree to accept custodied collateral under this model. Coinpedia's $700 billion institutional opportunity is a projection, not committed capital, so actual loan volumes through CustodySync in coming months will show whether banks and asset managers treat this as a genuine on-ramp or a limited pilot.
