Ripple and BNY expand partnership to custody XRP and RLUSD

Institutional clients who already use BNY for traditional custody can now hold XRP and RLUSD under the same regulated umbrella rather than routing through a separate crypto-native custodian. If the mint-and-redeem function materializes, those clients could create or cash out RLUSD directly at the bank, cutting out intermediaries and giving corporate treasurers a bank-grade on-ramp into Ripple's stablecoin without touching a crypto exchange.

Trade finance running on the XRP Ledger would put a major bank's settlement rails on a blockchain whose validator set and governance remain far more concentrated than Bitcoin's or Ethereum's, and BNY's growing custodial role adds another point where a single institution holds the keys. That sits awkwardly next to crypto's original pitch of disintermediated transfer, even as it is exactly the kind of backing that pushes conservative institutions toward adoption.

The open question is whether the mint-and-redeem capability and the tokenized trade finance pilot move from 'exploring' to a live, priced product, and on what timeline Ripple and BNY commit to. A concrete launch would mark the first time a global systemically important bank issues and redeems a dollar stablecoin in-house; continued silence on dates would suggest the announcement is still mostly a statement of intent.
