DTCC has opened its tokenization service to clients, putting U.S. stocks, ETFs and Treasuries onto blockchain rails through Canton Network and a private Besu chain. The launch has drawn major banks and brokerage firms into the rollout, while DTCC has also pointed to later expansion plans and a broader ecosystem of partners.

Key claims & sources

✓
Twenty DTC participants have signed access agreements for the service, and conversion orders run on a narrower schedule than round-the-clock token transfers.
✓
Ondo Finance is listed as an ecosystem collaborator in the launch alongside Broadridge, DRW and Fireblocks.
✓
Ondo said its CRCLon and SPYon were the first tokenized stocks backed by DTC Tokenized Entitlements generated through the DTCC Tokenization Service in July 2026.
✓
DTCC launched the service on Canton Network and its private Besu blockchain, with JPMorgan, Citi and Morgan Stanley among the 20 firms signed up.
✓
The service covers securities held in custody, and DTCC said it creates a practical path for tokenized securities adoption.
✓
DTCC has not disclosed the actual value of tokenized assets so far.
✓
DTCC said it plans to bring the service to Stellar in a later phase of the rollout.
✓
The Depository Trust Company opened the DTCC Tokenization Service to clients on Wednesday, and the service can mint a security held at DTC as a token and send it to a wallet chosen by the client, with conversion available in both directions between book-entry and tokenized form.

What it means

DTCC is the clearinghouse that settles nearly all U.S. securities trades, with roughly $30 trillion in assets held through its DTC subsidiary. Earlier pilots tested blockchain rails for parts of that plumbing, but this is the first commercial tokenization service covering stocks, ETFs and Treasuries. Twenty DTC participants, including JPMorgan, Citi and Morgan Stanley, signed access agreements, and Ondo's CRCLon and SPYon were already using DTC Tokenized Entitlements from a July 2026 pilot.

Banks with access agreements can now hold tokenized entitlements against securities already sitting in DTC custody, moving them on Canton Network or the private Besu chain rather than through older settlement cycles. Conversion orders still run on a narrower schedule than the round-the-clock token transfers the chains technically allow, so the system is faster in parts but not yet continuous. Firms like Ondo, Broadridge, DRW and Fireblocks gain a sanctioned channel to build products on top of DTC-backed tokens.

DTCC frames this as a practical path to tokenized securities adoption, and for Wall Street that is true: custody, settlement and compliance stay inside the existing regulated perimeter. But the service runs on permissioned chains controlled by DTCC and its bank partners, not open networks anyone can transact on, which is why one assessment called it tokenization launched without crypto's permissionless freedom. Centralized control may speed institutional uptake while limiting real integration with decentralized finance.

The next test is DTCC's planned expansion to Stellar, its first public blockchain integration, which would mark a shift from private, bank-only rails toward infrastructure outsiders can observe and potentially build on. Whether that phase keeps the same permissioned access-agreement model or opens settlement more broadly will show if this stays a closed bank network with a blockchain label or becomes something closer to open market infrastructure.
