Tether said its third-quarter 2026 attestation showed $1.5 billion in net operating profit and $7.95 billion in excess reserves as of Sept. 30, with BDO reviewing the report and the company’s reserve assets listed at $191.45 billion. The latest disclosures also show $4.5 billion in profit over the first nine months of 2026, while USDT issuance stayed near $184 billion and Treasury holdings remained central to the reserve mix.

What it means
Tether has never produced a full audit of its reserves, relying instead on quarterly attestations since its 2021 settlement with the New York Attorney General over misrepresented backing for USDT. BDO, a top-five accounting firm, has prepared these reports, covering a snapshot of assets and liabilities rather than activity across the period. Competitor Circle publishes monthly attestations for USDC. The Sept. 30 report is the latest in that recurring disclosure cycle, not a new regulatory requirement.
Holders of USDT get a thicker cushion: $7.95 billion above the $183.5 billion owed to token holders, up from $4.11 billion three months earlier. Tether's $132.4 billion in Treasury bills makes it one of the larger holders of U.S. government debt globally, tying its $1.5 billion quarterly profit to short-term rates and repo markets. For traders, nothing changes day to day — USDT issuance held near $184 billion, meaning liquidity and trading pairs are unaffected by the reserve shuffle.
The report's most uncomfortable detail is that Tether's $8.37 billion in Bitcoin now exceeds the $7.95 billion buffer meant to protect USDT holders from a shortfall. A cushion built to be a stable backstop is itself partly priced in a volatile asset, which cuts against the conservative-reserve pitch stablecoin issuers use to win trust. Attestations, unlike audits, don't resolve whether that composition is prudent — they only confirm the numbers on the day they were counted.
Tether's next attestation, due after year-end 2026, will show whether the buffer keeps pace if Bitcoin's price retreats, since the October snapshot already shows crypto holdings outsizing the safety net. Also worth tracking: any shift in Federal Reserve rate policy, which would directly move the Treasury-bill income driving Tether's profit, and whether U.S. stablecoin rules under the GENIUS Act eventually push issuers from periodic attestations toward mandatory full audits.
