HSBC has started rolling out RedCoin, its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, on the PayMe app for more than 3.3 million users in Hong Kong. The rollout is staged, and HSBC has also tied the launch to later plans for tokenized investment subscriptions and HK$100 tokenized fund investments in 2026.

What it means

Hong Kong's stablecoin ordinance, in force since August 2025, requires HKMA licensing for any coin pegged to a fiat currency, and HSBC built RedCoin inside that regime rather than outside it. PayMe, the bank's mobile wallet since 2017, already handles person-to-person transfers for millions in the city, making it the natural distribution channel instead of a standalone crypto app or exchange listing.

From October 23, 2026, the more than 3.3 million PayMe users can switch on a stablecoin wallet without opening a new account, settling peer-to-peer and merchant payments instantly rather than waiting on bank transfer cycles. Merchants gain faster settlement without card-network intermediaries, while HSBC positions itself to later route customers into tokenized fund subscriptions starting at HK$100, a minimum far below typical investment account thresholds.

A global bank issuing a retail stablecoin inside its own payment app sits uneasily beside the peer-to-peer, no-intermediary design crypto was built for: RedCoin moves value instantly, but HSBC holds the keys, the reserves and the license. That is closer to JPMorgan's institutional JPM Coin than to a public blockchain token, and it raises a fair question of whether 'stablecoin' here means less a currency alternative than a faster rail HSBC controls end to end.

The next marker is whether HSBC follows through on extending RedCoin into institutional services and tokenized investment subscriptions, both flagged as upcoming rather than live. The HK$100 tokenized fund offering planned for 2026 will show whether RedCoin becomes a genuine on-ramp to retail investment products or stays confined to payments within PayMe's existing user base.
