Liquid Says Bitcoin Swaps Are Restored While Peg-Outs Stay Frozen
Published
Liquid Network said swaps were working again while peg-outs remained frozen, and its reserves still covered about 85.8% of outstanding L-BTC, leaving a shortfall of roughly 603 BTC. Bitcoin Magazine also reported that the network said it had entered the final stages of recovery more than a month after a hack that took 4,000 bitcoin from the federation wallet before most of it was returned.
What this rests on
What it means
Liquid Network is a Bitcoin sidechain used for faster settlement and token issuance, so disruptions to its federation wallet affect core functions rather than just a peripheral service. The restoration of swaps and the continued freeze on peg-outs show that parts of the system can come back online before all movements in and out of the network are reopened. This follows a period in which the network has been under recovery after the incident involving its federation wallet.
For users and builders, the immediate practical issue is which bridge functions are available: swaps can resume while peg-outs remain unavailable. That means L-BTC holders still cannot fully move back to bitcoin through the usual path, and anyone relying on Liquid for settlement has to work around a constrained network. The 85.8% reserve figure and the 603 BTC shortfall show that the backing position is still not back to a fully normal state.
The case highlights a long-running tension in sidechains and federation-based systems: they can offer speed and specialized features, but they also concentrate operational risk in a small set of custodial or multisignature controls. When a network has to freeze a core function after a wallet incident, the trade-off between efficiency and resilience becomes visible to every participant. The return of most of the stolen bitcoin in a white hat operation also shows how recovery in crypto can involve informal and highly specific responses rather than standard financial backstops.
Still open is the question of when peg-outs will reopen and whether Liquid will bring reserves back to full coverage of outstanding L-BTC. The current reports do not say what additional steps remain before that happens, or whether any further balance changes will come from new deposits, withdrawals, or other adjustments. What would settle it is a follow-up from Liquid with a reopening date and a fresh reserve update.
