OpenAI nears $30B funding round at $1.2T valuation

OpenAI is lining up a new funding round that could bring in up to $30 billion, with coverage placing the target valuation between $1.2 trillion and $1.25 trillion. The latest reporting also says investors were told to sign by the end of next week, and that UAE investors and Coatue are part of the group involved.
What this rests on
What it means
OpenAI priced its last funding round near $852 billion in March, then saw bankers float a $1.4 trillion valuation earlier this month before investors balked. That target has since been cut to $1.25 trillion, still nearly 50% above the March mark. The retreat lands weeks before Anthropic, OpenAI's closest rival, is expected to test public markets, putting both companies' private pricing under scrutiny at the same time.
Investors were told on Thursday to commit by October 30, a tight window for a round that could bring in as much as $30 billion. Coatue and UAE-linked investors are leading the group, giving Gulf capital and a major hedge fund outsized influence over OpenAI's cap table. Anyone who signed earlier near the $1.4 trillion level effectively overpaid; those joining now buy in cheaper, while OpenAI secures less fresh cash than it originally sought.
A valuation retreat from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion, after what reporting describes as investor resistance, shows private markets pushing back on AI pricing even as headline numbers stay enormous. The round still implies a company worth more than most national stock markets, financed entirely outside public listing rules. Whether that scale of private capital formation, concentrated among a handful of funds and sovereign investors, is healthy for price discovery is a fair question nobody in the deal is required to answer.
The October 30 signature deadline is the next concrete marker: if investors sign at $1.25 trillion, OpenAI books roughly a 50% markup since March without needing public markets. A failure to fill the round, or a further valuation cut, would strengthen the case that private AI pricing has outrun demand, and would sharpen comparisons with Anthropic's parallel path toward a public listing.
Market reaction
The move was larger before the first headline than after. That is an observation, not an explanation: the market also moves on things nobody publishes.
How the story was built
Every piece in order, with the time its news medium declares — if it is not believable we use ours and say so — and what it added to what was already known at that point. Arriving first is not the same as adding something.
