Robinhood taps Ripple’s $2.5 billion RLUSD stablecoin despite backing rival USDG

Robinhood said it will add Ripple’s RLUSD to its app by the end of 2026, after already backing the rival dollar token USDG. Ripple framed the move as part of a wider push that also touches institutional markets, custody, and trade finance.
What this rests on
What it means
RLUSD is Ripple's dollar-backed token, launched in 2024 under New York's trust charter regime, built to compete with Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC. Robinhood took the opposite side of that fight last year, co-founding USDG with Paxos and Galaxy as a rival payments stablecoin. Ripple has spent 2025 courting banks and brokerages after its long-running SEC dispute closed, pushing RLUSD into custody and settlement work rather than just trading pairs.
Robinhood's 28.6 million funded customers will eventually see RLUSD sit next to USDG in the app, giving them a second dollar token for trading, transfers or yield-bearing products once the rollout lands by the end of 2026. Ripple gets retail distribution it previously lacked, plus deeper institutional plumbing: custody through BNY and trade-finance settlement with C2FO on the XRP Ledger. Bitstamp and Robinhood Chain already carry RLUSD, so the app listing extends an existing pipe rather than building a new one.
A brokerage backing two competing dollar tokens at once says more about the stablecoin market than about either coin: Robinhood is hedging rather than picking a winner, which undercuts the idea that USDG was ever meant to be an exclusive standard. Ripple's parallel push into bank custody and trade finance shows stablecoins moving from exchange collateral toward settlement infrastructure, a shift regulators and incumbent banks are still working out how to supervise. Whether RLUSD's multi-rail distribution outpaces USDG's network effects is an open commercial question, not a technical one.
The date to track is end of 2026, Robinhood's own deadline for putting RLUSD in front of retail users; slippage would say more about integration friction than demand. Ripple's October 27 Swell announcement, reportedly drawing attention from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is the venue where the company is expected to detail how far the institutional side, custody with BNY and trade finance with C2FO, actually extends beyond press language into live settlement volume.
