Circle said it generated about $1.4 billion in first-half 2026 revenue and paid $819 million to USDC distribution partners and related transaction costs. New coverage also says USDC crossed $36 trillion in onchain transaction volume, accounted for about 77% of global stablecoin transaction activity in June, and is being pushed into 40 emerging markets.

What it means
USDC is the dollar stablecoin Circle took public in 2025, built to compete with Tether's USDT for payments, trading settlement and treasury use. Its economics have long depended on paying exchanges and wallets, chiefly Coinbase, a cut of reserve interest to keep USDC circulating on their platforms, a structure that predates the 2023 dissolution of the old Centre consortium. This disclosure is the first time Circle has put a precise dollar figure on what that distribution model actually costs.
A payout ratio this heavy exposes the dependency at the center of stablecoin economics: issuers need large distribution partners to reach users, but that dependency hands those partners outsized leverage over an issuer's margins. If reserve yields fall as rates ease, the same 59-cent split could turn from a growth cost into a structural drag, raising doubts about whether Circle's current model scales without partners, or shareholders, eventually demanding a renegotiated share.
Circle's next disclosure, expected with its Q4 2026 results, will show whether the payout ratio holds near 59 cents or shifts as interest rates move and the 40-market expansion matures. A lower ratio would signal Circle gaining pricing power over partners; a higher one would confirm that distribution costs are rising faster than revenue, intensifying scrutiny of whether the current USDC model can sustain its scale without compressing Circle's own returns.
