Stellar (XLM) Holders, Mark Your Calendars: Major Network Upgrade Announced
Published Updated 4 new reports since it was first published
Stellar has scheduled Bell votes on testnet for November 3 and on mainnet for November 23. The upgrade is positioned around post-quantum security, with Bell described as a step toward quantum-resistant signatures, smarter accounts, and faster ledger processing.
What this rests on
What it means
Stellar launched in 2014 on its own consensus protocol and built its reputation on payment rails used by partners like MoneyGram and IBM's World Wire. Upgrades move through validator votes on Core Advancement Proposals, not a single company's say-so. Quantum computing's long-term threat to elliptic-curve signatures, the kind securing most blockchains today, has pushed several networks to plan ahead. Bell is Stellar's answer, arriving alongside similar post-quantum roadmaps from Tron and Starknet.
Validators need to run Bell-compatible software ahead of the November 3 testnet vote, then ratify activation on November 23 for it to reach mainnet. Developers working with smart accounts face changes to account structure and faster ledger processing, which may require code adjustments. Wallets and custodians get a long runway rather than a hard cutover: quantum-resistant signatures are only meant to cover every account by the end of 2027, so migration is gradual, not immediate.
Moving an entire network toward post-quantum signatures forces a trade-off between urgency and disruption. Cryptographers still disagree on how soon quantum machines could realistically break today's elliptic-curve signatures, yet rewriting account and ledger logic now risks breaking compatibility for existing wallets and contracts. Whether Bell counts as prudent foresight or premature hedging depends on a timeline nobody can fix precisely, which is itself the strongest case for starting the work early rather than late.
The November 3 testnet vote will show whether validators accept Bell's account and ledger changes before any mainnet commitment. The November 23 mainnet vote then decides whether the upgrade actually activates across the network. Beyond those two dates, the real test is further out: Stellar's own target of having quantum-resistant signatures covering all accounts by the end of 2027, a deadline that will measure follow-through rather than announcement.
