Starknet community overwhelmingly backs research into becoming an independent post-quantum Layer 1

Starknet’s community backed research into whether the network should evolve into an independent post-quantum Layer 1, with the vote framed as non-binding and a draft whitepaper expected in November. The new coverage adds that the poll closed on Thursday, Oct. 22 after seven days, and that Starknet said it wants full post-quantum security by 2027.
What this rests on
What it means
Starknet is a zero-knowledge rollup built by StarkWare that settles proofs on Ethereum, using STARK cryptography that, unlike the elliptic-curve and SNARK-based systems common elsewhere, is already considered resistant to attacks from quantum computers. Rollups have long been pitched as Ethereum's scaling layer, dependent on it for security and data availability. This vote is the first formal step toward testing whether Starknet could instead become its own base-layer chain, detached from that dependency.
Nothing changes for developers or STRK holders today: contracts, bridges and sequencer operations stay exactly as they are while StarkWare drafts its whitepaper. If research eventually supports a move, builders would face a rearchitecture of settlement assumptions and bridge security, validators could face new staking or consensus roles, and Ethereum would lose one of its larger rollups as a direct economic anchor. Users gain, at most, a roadmap; they lose nothing they held before the vote.
A rollup walking away from its settlement layer cuts against the pitch that Layer 2s exist to inherit Ethereum's security rather than replace it, and raises a fair question about whether 'independence' here means more resilience or simply less reliance on a neighbor. The quantum-resistance framing is real cryptography, but the urgency is debatable given no quantum computer yet threatens live blockchains; treating this as insurance research is more defensible than treating it as an imminent fix.
The 93.52% approval only authorized research, not a migration, and StarkWare's promised draft whitepaper in November is the next concrete marker. Any real transition still requires a second, binding governance vote after that technical work is published, so the actual decision point sits months away. Watch whether the whitepaper proposes a concrete consensus and token model, since that will determine if the binding vote becomes a live choice or stays theoretical.

Every piece in order, with the time its news medium declares — if it is not believable we use ours and say so — and what it added to what was already known at that point. Arriving first is not the same as adding something.
