What it means
Ripple's RLUSD is a dollar-pegged stablecoin built to settle cross-border payments, the function Ripple's XRP Ledger was designed for before stablecoins existed. It launched in December 2024 into a market already dominated by Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC, both long integrated into Coinbase's products. By the time of this listing RLUSD had grown past a $2.5 billion market capitalization, still a fraction of its two larger rivals.
Retail traders and institutions can now convert US dollars into RLUSD at a 1:1 rate directly inside Coinbase's consumer app, Exchange and Prime, across XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum. Corporate treasuries using Prime gain a regulated custody path into RLUSD instead of routing through wires or third-party rails. Smaller or less-distributed stablecoin issuers lose ground, since RLUSD now sits alongside the two incumbents at an $2.61 billion market cap, already the eighth-largest stablecoin.
Coinbase is also an equity partner and distributor of Circle's USDC, so hosting a direct rival stablecoin tests how neutral an exchange can stay while holding a stake in one competitor. Ripple pitches RLUSD as transparent and compliant in the same terms Circle uses for USDC, which suggests the real contest has shifted from stablecoin design to exchange placement and liquidity access, the same dynamic one report framed as a challenge to Kraken's corporate-cash hold.
Coinbase confirmed the rollout on October 28, setting the starting point for RLUSD's next phase. What will settle its standing is whether its market capitalization narrows the gap with USDC's far larger base, and whether rival exchanges answer with their own stablecoin-distribution deals rather than ceding corporate settlement volume to Coinbase and Ripple.
