Synthetix has recovered 8.4 million SNX linked to the Binance hack, and the protocolDAO said the tokens are being held in a Safe for return when Binance asks for them. New coverage also says the attacker accidentally locked about 8 million Newton tokens in a dead contract, and that these were among at least nine moves made against the stolen haul.

What it means
Synthetix is a DeFi protocol whose SNX token backs its synthetic-asset system, run by a protocolDAO rather than a single company. Binance disclosed that roughly $6.3 billion was drained from the exchange, now the largest exploit on record in crypto. Attackers moved the stolen funds through many tokens and chains, SNX among them, while projects and analysts worked to trace and intercept pieces of the haul across at least nine separate actions.
Synthetix's protocolDAO has parked 8.4 million SNX in a multisig Safe rather than handing it back directly, meaning Binance must formally request the funds before they move again. SNX holders avoid the risk of the stolen batch being dumped on open markets. The attacker, meanwhile, permanently lost access to nearly $3.5 million in Newton tokens, a self-inflicted error that works like an involuntary burn no enforcement agency forced.
A protocol able to freeze and claw back tokens tied to its own contract cuts against the premise that crypto assets, once stolen, move beyond any single party's reach. Synthetix could intervene because SNX carries governance-level controls that many so-called decentralized tokens simply don't have. That is worth asking of any token with this capability: who else can freeze or redirect transfers, and on what grounds, outside of emergencies like this one.
Binance has not yet filed the formal claim Synthetix says it is waiting on, so the 8.4 million SNX stays untouched in the DAO's Safe until that request lands. Separately, whether the roughly 8 million locked Newton tokens stay permanently stranded, or a contract-level fix someday frees them, will decide if the attacker's near-$3.5 million mistake becomes a lasting loss or an eventually reversible one.
