Solana’s Yakovenko questions Alpenglow build as vote transactions exit
Published Updated 1 new report since it was first published
Solana’s Alpenglow change is set for an Oct. 21 consensus migration that removes validator vote transactions from blocks. Anatoly Yakovenko also questioned the design, saying the work could have been finished in about half the time with a simpler change to the voting program.
What this rests on
What it means
Solana is changing how validator voting is handled, and the Oct. 21 migration is the date attached to that shift. Yakovenko’s comments matter because he is one of Solana’s founders, so his view lands inside the project rather than outside it. This is happening around a network-level governance and fee redesign, not a minor application update.
The larger issue is the trade-off between faster protocol changes and the complexity of getting network upgrades right on a live blockchain. Solana is choosing a design that changes block contents and validator economics at the same time, which puts technical simplicity and system coordination in tension. Yakovenko’s criticism shows that even inside a project, there can be disagreement over whether a more direct path should have been used.
