Zcash Climbs 9.5% Ahead of NU7 Network Upgrade
Zcash’s NU7 upgrade has gone live, cutting the network’s target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and changing how fees and rewards are handled. Exchange operations around the upgrade have also been adjusted, with Kraken temporarily pausing ZEC deposits and withdrawals during a scheduled maintenance window.

What it means
Zcash has run on a 75-second block target since launch in 2016, a legacy of its Bitcoin codebase fork that long left it slower than most proof-of-work chains. Node operators had been racing to upgrade before a hard deadline, since unpatched software would fall out of consensus once NU7 activated. Shielded Labs, the team now stewarding Zcash's protocol development, had flagged the change weeks in advance alongside a new fee-recycling design.
Deposits can now confirm roughly three times faster, a concrete gain for exchanges and shielded-payment users who previously waited through 75-second intervals. Kraken built a maintenance window around the cutover, pausing ZEC deposits and withdrawals for six hours while other assets kept trading normally. Miners now earn differently too: 60% of transaction fees are pulled out of circulation immediately and only paid back through block rewards years later, changing short-term fee income even as issuance stays roughly flat.
Removing fees now and repaying them later through block rewards is an unusual monetary design, and it puts Zcash's issuance schedule under a kind of deferred-payment arrangement that didn't exist before NU7. Supporters frame the Network Sustainability Mechanism as a way to fund long-term development without new taxation; critics could reasonably ask whether delaying fee payouts by years quietly rewrites the supply promise that gave Zcash its fixed-cap credibility in the first place.
About 12,224 ZEC sat in the legacy Sprout shielded pool when the spending cutoff took effect, and whether holders of those coins can still move them under the new rules is the detail to track next. Kraken's six-hour maintenance window, scheduled for November 6 from 01:30 to 07:30 UTC, is the first real test of exchange-side handling; a clean reopening would confirm NU7 shipped without custodial disruption.
Market reaction i
The move was larger before the first headline than after. That is an observation, not an explanation: the market also moves on things nobody publishes.
