Anchorage Digital and Securitize announced a setup that ties federally chartered banking to stablecoin issuance and redemption for tokenized assets. New coverage adds that Anchorage now sits inside a broader run of distribution wins, while Securitize’s tokenization business already serves large asset managers and related funds.

Securitize said stablecoins will be created and redeemed directly through Anchorage Digital Bank, without third-party intermediaries.

What it means

Anchorage Digital Bank holds a national trust charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, making it one of the few crypto firms with a federal banking license. Securitize built its name as an SEC-registered transfer agent, then became the engine behind BlackRock's BUIDL fund in 2024, a tokenized money-market product now used as collateral across institutional crypto. Linking the two brings a chartered bank directly into stablecoin minting for assets Securitize already services.

Funds tied to BlackRock, Apollo, KKR and Hamilton Lane, covering more than $4 billion on Securitize's platform, can now settle in stablecoins minted and redeemed straight through Anchorage Digital Bank, skipping the third-party issuers that normally sit between tokenized funds and cash. That cuts a settlement layer and its counterparty risk for institutional buyers, but it also means Anchorage becomes the single point of failure for issuance on these products, a concentration its institutional clients will have to price into their own risk models.

A federally chartered bank controlling mint-and-burn for stablecoins tied to tokenized BlackRock and KKR products is a very different arrangement from the open, multi-issuer stablecoin model crypto was built around. It is a sound compromise for regulated finance, where institutions want a bank, not a protocol, on the other end of a redemption request, but it sits closer to traditional banking rails wearing a blockchain wrapper than to the permissionless ideal the technology once promised.

The reserve mix behind USDtb is the number to track: as of August 31, 99% of its $530 million in reserves sat in BlackRock's BUIDL fund, meaning the stablecoin's safety now rides almost entirely on one tokenized money-market product. Any shift in that concentration, or new disclosures from Anchorage and Securitize on how issuance volumes move once the bank-direct model is live, will show whether this partnership actually displaces existing stablecoin issuers or simply adds a parallel rail alongside them.

The move was larger before the first headline than after. That is an observation, not an explanation: the market also moves on things nobody publishes.
