Circle said its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol can now work with issuer-operated ERC-20 tokens beyond USDC, beginning on Arc testnet. The company also laid out a native path and a custom path for issuers to make those tokens interoperable with CCTP, while describing the Arc example as a testnet walkthrough rather than a universal production rollout.

Circle outlined two ways to integrate those tokens with CCTP: a native route and a custom route.
✓
Circle published technical guidance showing how issuers can use CCTP infrastructure for tokens other than USDC.
✓
Circle said the Arc example is a testnet walkthrough, not a promise of broad production support.
✓
Circle said developers can move issuer-operated ERC-20 assets between supported blockchains through CCTP without separate bridges or wrapped copies.

What it means

CCTP launched in 2023 as Circle's answer to wrapped-token bridges, burning USDC on a source chain and minting it natively on the destination, sidestepping the custodial risk that hit bridges like Wormhole and Multichain. Until now the protocol only moved Circle's own stablecoin. Arc, Circle's own testnet chain, becomes the first place where issuer-operated ERC-20 tokens other than USDC can ride the same rails, via a native or a custom integration path.

Token issuers building stablecoins, tokenized funds or loyalty tokens can now skip building or renting a bridge and instead plug into CCTP's burn-and-mint mechanics directly. Developers get one fewer wrapped asset to track and one fewer custodial bridge contract to trust when moving these tokens across supported chains. Bridge operators serving that niche lose a captive market; issuers gain optionality, though only on Arc's testnet for now, not in production.

Circle built its reputation on CCTP's non-custodial design, letting USDC move without a central party holding wrapped collateral. Extending that same pipe to third-party tokens turns Circle's infrastructure into a shared interoperability layer that other issuers depend on, which raises a fair question: if Circle operates and upgrades the only rails available, how different is that from a single company holding the keys, even without custody of the tokens themselves?

Circle has explicitly called the Arc rollout a testnet walkthrough, not a production commitment, so the decision to watch is whether native and custom CCTP support for non-USDC tokens reaches Arc mainnet or other supported chains, and which issuers choose the native route over the custom one. That choice, and its timing, will show whether this becomes Circle's standard offering to stablecoin and asset issuers broadly.
